What is included in a consult?
At a consult we will spend about an hour discussing your desires and dreams for birth, your previous birth experiences, and answering any questions you may have about me or about homebirth in general.
What do you do in a prenatal visit?
We talk about nutrition, your birth history and previous experiences, your upcoming birth, common experiences of pregnancy, supplements, and baby’s position, as well as measuring your uterus, taking your blood pressure, and listening to the baby’s heartbeat.
What is the difference between a midwife and a doula?
A midwife provides clinical care: monitoring your health, helping you catch your baby, and managing clinical aspects of pregnancy and birth. A doula offers emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth, but doesn’t provide medical care. They can both be important members of your birth team.
What do your services include?
We follow a typical prenatal schedule, with monthly office visits until around 28 weeks, then 2 visits a month until 38 weeks, and then weekly or twice a week until you have your baby. Postpartum we come to your home to check on you and baby at minimum 5 times, once in the first 24-48 hours, around 3-5 days, another week after that, 3 weeks, and at 5-6 weeks postpartum. Sometimes moms need more postpartum support, and we are happy to come by for help with lactation or to address any concerns. We are also available by phone for troubleshooting or help.
Is homebirth messy?
It can be a little messy, but we always leave your home better than we found it. Hydrogen peroxide takes up blood stains, we use chux pads and towels, and use sanitary wipes to clean up. We also take out the trash and start a load of laundry when we leave.
What labs or prenatal testing do you offer?
We offer standard labs like initial bloodwork, thyroid testing, GBS swabs, gestational diabetes, and more. We also offer standard newborn care like the vitamin K shot, CCHD, and metabolic screen.
I've had a c-section, can I have a homebirth?
Yes, most people who have had c-sections are eligible for homebirth.
Do you offer waterbirth?
Yes, we include a tub and liner in the birth fee.
What happens if there is an emergency?
Midwives are trained to handle complications and carry emergency supplies like herbs/medications for postpartum bleeding and resuscitation equipment. If a transfer to the hospital becomes necessary, your midwife will coordinate and accompany you. Most transfers are non-emergent for long labors or pain relief.
Do I need a birth certificate or social security number for my baby?
Your midwife will help you fill out the paperwork to get a birth certificate and social security number for your baby.
When does my newborn need to see the pediatrician?
Your midwife will provide newborn care up to 6 weeks of age. Usually parents take their newborn to the doctor around 2 months old for their first appointment.
